The sculptor Villu Jaanisoo considers himself an exploiter of his classical art education: What are the accepted subjects, themes and techniques for an artwork, and how does the fine-art context influence the viewer. Jaanisoo has a witty, unprejudiced way of using mundane materials, such as car tyres or plywood. In his hands the original meaning and form of the materials are broken. He also uses the size and proportions of objects as a means of expression. His spatial installations and environmental art call into question their own sculpturality, location and aesthetic.
Estonian-born sculptor Villu Jaanisoo (b. 1963 Tallinn) graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the Estonian Academy of Arts in 1989, and has been living in Finland since the early 90’s. Since 2008, he has been Professor of Sculpture at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. Besides his exhibition work, Jaanisoo has made several environmental sculptures in the Baltic region and internationally, including in the USA.
