Kaarlo Stauffer works with figurative painting, oftentimes using different kinds of sourced materials such as photographs, drawings, illustrations or found images as his starting points. The relationship between his source material, the act of painting, observation and narrative are at constant interplay in Stauffer’s work.
Stauffer’s paintings, created in the alternation of rich, layered surfaces and light, airy strokes, depict simultaneously something familiar and something fantastical, strange and uncanny. Stauffer’s works are heavily influenced by art history, literature and philosophy. Through these inspirations, his skillful use of paint and colours and his treatment of landscape and casts of characters Stauffer creates his own unique world and vocabulary of painting.
