Kosen Ohtsubo in Skulptur Projekte Münster 2027

Kosen Ohtsubo will take part in the 6th edition of Skulptur Projekte Münster, taking place in Münster, Germany from 13 June to 3 October 2027.

Kosen Ohtsubo began studying ikebana, a traditional Japanese art form that uses plants as its material, in the 1960s. Since then, he has explored his own forms of expression beyond the beauty and conventions traditionally associated with ikebana, sometimes transforming entire spaces through large-scale installations. Ohtsubo often works with materials drawn from everyday life, such as vegetables, worn clothing, and discarded objects. In Münster, he will turn to local apple trees that are cut down when they no longer bear fruit. Together with a local team, he will use these trees to create a large outdoor installation in the centre of the city.

Skulptur Projekte Münster is an international exhibition of contemporary art held in the public space of the city every ten years. Returning to the city every ten years since its founding in 1977, the coming edition marks the 50th anniversary of Skulptur Porjekte Münster. Initiated by Klaus Bußmann and Kasper König, Skulptur Projekte redefined art in the public space and has established a deep and lasting engagement with the social fabric of Münster. Past exhibitions shows how each the Skulptur Projekte was shaped by current developments in art, society, contemporary history, and the nature of the sites.

The 2027 iteration will be directed by the curatorial collective What, How & for Whom / WHW and hosted by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) and the City of Münster. The exhibition is organized by the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur.

Kosen Ohtsubo and Tuomas A. Laitinen's joint exhibition Mitate 見立て is on view at Helsinki Contemporary from October 30 until November 22, 2026.
