A six-part series of works by visual artist Kati Immonen, titled ”International Squirrels”, has been completed for the interior of the Turku International School and Daycare Center in Turku, Finland.
The work consists of an art wallpaper in the dining hall, sticker prints attached to the glass surfaces in the classrooms, an animation, watercolor paintings on birch plywood, and a poetry book that Immonen created in collaboration with the school's students and author Emilia Lehtinen.
In ”International Squirrels”, the artist highlights the school's multiculturalism and internationality through squirrels – the series is based on different types of squirrels from different continents, lively creatures that scamper around yards and forests. Squirrels may be "just" squirrels, common and ordinary animals, but they tell us about our own roots.
The series of works will be added to the City of Turku's art collection, whose public artworks are managed and maintained by WAM Turku Art Museum.
