Jukka Korkeila’s retrospective exhibition ”Darkness is full of light” opens in June at Hämeenlinna Art Museum. The exhibition will run from June 5 until October 19, 2025.

The exhibition ”Darkness is full of light” (Pimeys on täynnä valoa) presents the extensive and diverse artistic production of Jukka Korkeila (b. 1968), a visual artist born and raised in Hämeenlinna, Finland.

Korkeila is known primarily as a painter, but spatial art, installations and drawings play an important role in his artistic work. The exhibition at the Hämeenlinna Art Museum also highlights works from the artist's oeuvre that have rarely or never been shown in Finland.

The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by a retrospective publication on Jukka Korkeila's artistic production. The publication features articles by Livia Hekanaho,  literary and cultural researcher PhD, Juha-Heikki Tihinen, art historian PhD, as well as Jukka Korkeila. The book includes selected images of works previously unpublished in books focusing on Korkeila's art. The publication completes the picture of Jukka Korkeila's production and brings out new aspects of it.

Jukka Korkeila has been working as a visual artist for 30 years and his work has been exhibited in 26 countries, including the São Paulo Biennial in 2004. Korkeila has been awarded the Finnish Young Artist of the Year prize in 1999, the William Thuring Prize in 2009 and the State Prize for Visual Arts in 2019. He has studied fine arts, architecture and interior design in Finland and Germany. Jukka Korkeila lives and works in Berlin, Helsinki and Glauburg-Stockheim, Oberhessen.
