Finnish Art Society’s literature award has this year been given to Heli Rekula for her artists’ book In Hemingway’s Garden. The Society’s literature award is appointed to works that have significantly furthered art literature and recognition of art in Finland.

The literature committee writes about their selection as follows: ”Photographer Heli Rekula’s (b. 1963) book In Hemingway’s Garden can be described as chamber music in the genre of fine art literature. In her modest yet beautiful publication, Heli Rekula weaves together her experiences of Ernest Hemingway’s home and museum in Florida."

”This is my first artists’ book and I am truly honored for the recognition. I want to thank everyone who took part in the making of this book and supported the project.” says Heli Rekula.

The book In Hemingway’s Garden was released at Helsinki Contemporary on September 29th 2014. The book is for sale at the gallery. The book comprises of two essays and accompanying photographs. The first essay is by the artist and the second by arts researcher, PhD Hanna Johansson. The book is part of an ensemble together with a namesake exhibition, seen at Helsinki Contemporary in August 2013 and later at Norway’s Kunsthuset Kabuso, Oslo Kunstforening and Fotografisk Center in Denmark. The book is also on sale in Denmark at Fotografisk Center and Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s Motto bookstore. Oslo Kunstforening will present a release of the book at the Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo on December 11th at 6 pm, after which the book will be also available at local Torpedo bookstore.
