Photographic artist Sanna Kannisto (b. 1974) has been awarded with the William Thuring designated prize.

The William Thuring Foundation’s main prize and other designated prizes are awarded without application to mid-career artists between ages 35 and 45. The William Thuring Foundation is the most important supporter of the Finnish Art Society.

Sanna Kannisto’s oeuvre combines powerful personal narrative with the idea of photography as objective documentation. Her recent photographs relate to the current topic of the terrain that separates the sciences from the arts. Kannisto’s photographs can be viewed as a performance: she creates miniature studios that function as both a laboratory and a stage for the photographic process. The images focus on plants and animals that we can rarely hope to see in their natural habitats, while the theatrical presentation distances us from the actual subject matter.

Sanna Kannisto's new works are currently shown at Ateneum Art Museum in The Von Wright Brothers exhibition. Above, Kannisto tells about her artistic practice on a video filmed in the beautiful landscape of Hanko Bird Station.
