Nathan Coley
Nathan Coley
The Scottish artist Nathan Coley (b. 1967, Glasgow) explores the public space and the social aspects of the built environment. He works in a variety of media including, sculpture, drawing, video and photography. His text-based works he often use texts picked up from different contexts such as radio interviews. In Coley’s artistic practice private becomes general, like when he turned the testimony of a New Yorker recalling the 9/11 into a illuminated massive text installation stating “A Place Beyond Belief”. Coley has exhibited widely in Europe, Australia and the US. His works are represented in many international public collections. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2007.
As part of Aarhus – European Capital of Culture 2017 project called Coast to Coast, Coley has been commissioned to devise a series of illuminating text works called ‘The Same for Everyone’ that will be spread across Denmark from the West to East coasts, linking the entire region.
